SoTL Scholars Presentation - Emi Kanemoto Online

This session draws from an autoethnographic study tracing the journey of a transnational Asian teacher‑scholar navigating U.S. academia—from international undergraduate student to early‑career faculty. The research interrogates how deficit views, which frame linguistic and cultural differences as forms of “lack,” shape perceptions of credibility, belonging, and academic legitimacy.

Using Yosso’s framework of deficit view and community cultural wealth, the study examines how racialized language ideologies shape marginalization within U.S. higher education and how these ideologies become embedded in everyday academic interactions. It also highlights how cultural wealth can be recognized, affirmed, and expanded in academic spaces, inviting educators to reconsider how linguistic diversity is understood and valued in higher education.
