Designing Clear, AI-Informed Assignments: Setting Students Up for Success Online
With AI tools rapidly becoming part of students’ learning ecosystems, faculty are seeking practical ways to design assignments that embrace these technologies while still preserving authentic learning. This interactive workshop focuses on creating clear, intentional assignment guidelines that help students understand when and how AI can appropriately support their work - and where independent thinking is essential.
Instead of relying on uncertain indicators of AI misuse, we’ll explore how transparent expectations, well-scaffolded prompts, and explicit AI policies naturally guide students toward the work we want to see. We’ll discuss how thoughtfully designed assignments make it easier to recognize when instructions haven’t been followed, without positioning AI itself as the enemy.
Participants will review examples, collaborate on effective policy language, and spend dedicated time drafting or refining their own assignment instructions and AI-use statements. You’ll leave with practical, adaptable tools that support student learning, reduce confusion, and integrate AI in ways that align with your course goals and institutional vision.
