Faculty: Designing Canvas Courses that Minimize Cognitive Load Online
Please Note: The meeting will close 10 minutes after the start time if no participants have joined.
Have you ever opened a course site and immediately felt overwhelmed? That feeling is an example of cognitive load, which refers to the mental effort it takes to find, process, and understand information. When a course is disorganized or inconsistent, students end up spending more time figuring out where things are than actually engaging with the material.
This training introduces the concept of cognitive load and how small design choices in Canvas can make a big difference for your students. We’ll focus on simple, effective strategies that reduce unnecessary effort and support learning.
You’ll learn how to:
-
Organize Modules in a clear, chronological order
-
Name files and documents in a way that makes sense (for example, including the course name and week)
-
Use consistent due dates and times across the course
-
Set up a percentage-based Gradebook so students understand how they’re doing
These adjustments can help your students focus on what matters most - learning the content.
This session will be held on Microsoft Teams.
